Description
The Digital Press Operator role is responsible for the set up and operation of multi-color digital printing presses in accordance with the printing specifications and customer requirements/expectations.  

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Performing routine printing procedures according to specifications, most of which require specific skills and aptitudes.
  • Reviews orders and verifies appropriate stocks and laser die lines are utilized as specified.
  • Pulls specifications, verifies colors, ripped artwork revision, die line, stock, and special instructions.
  • Performs line clearance by following digital line clearance SOP.
  • Sets up machine; installs inks, correct stock, die line, and print alignment.
  • Match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
  • Completes all start-up checks, verifies scan ability of bar code, and obtains start approval.
  • Loads the specified type of paper and feeds the paper through the press cylinders.
  • Closes out job by verifying end to start approval and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Performs technical adjustments and maintenance of the digital press.
  • Adhears to procedures performing quality inspections, visual discrimination, print quality analysis and judgment.
  • Adheres to procedures and operates machine to acieve throughput and waste goals.
  • Recognizes when routine adjustments are necessary, catching errors at the earliest possible stage to minimize production reworks.
  • Troubleshoots machine when it is not performing to standards.
  • Performs in a work cell environment, performing finishing operations as necessary.
  • Follows 6S guidelines assigned to work area and surrounding areas – this will be a clean room environment.
  • Required to work 12 hour shifts; required to work weekends as scheduled on a regular or as-needed basis.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent.
  • Courses in Graphics, Print Production or Operations are beneficial.
  • Courses in Chemistry, Electronics, Color Theory, and Physics are helpful, but not integral.
  • Requires a minimum 2 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment.
 
Preferred Skills:
  • Background and experience in conventional offset press operation, color printing and preferably digital press color printing.
  • Basic personal computer skills including electronic mail and word processing.
  • Understanding the basic process of prepress.
  • Experience in operating mechanical/electromechanical equipment.
  • Graphic Design and Color theory experience.
  • Basic math skills to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables.
  • Read and comprehend measurements on a ruler.
  • Solid verbal and written communications skills with strong ability to follow written or verbal instructions
  • Read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Pass color vision and color hue tests.
  • Maintain good attendance.
  • Willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to be a cross-functional employee that can work with multiple teams within the organization to achieve success
  • Capable of devising multiple alternative solutions based on limited assumptions and information
 
Physical Demands:
Works in a manufacturing environment and will be required to wear hearing, foot, and/or other personal protective equipment while performing duties in a manufacturing setting.  May, on a continuous basis, stand for a long period of time and stoop and kneel frequently. May handle, feel and reach for items in and around press area, also write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Some walking and lifting and/or move up to 50 lbs. may be required.  Vision: close vision, distance and color vision to distinguish color variations, peripheral and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually medium to loud.  Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed. Must be able to work overtime as required by workload and customer mandated deadlines.
